Top 10 songs

Album: SakkarakattiSong: Marudaani…Music director: A.R.RahmanSinger(s): Madhusree, A.R.Rahman, HenryWith Rahman, you cant expect anything less, of course. Very pleasing opening bars that catch your fancy. The song seems to be based on the raag Maand. Vaali’s lyrics talk basically about love. Though a little heavy on rhythms, the song grows on you after sometime

Album: KuselanSong: Om zaarare...Music director: G.V.PrakashSinger(s): Daler Mehndi,Chitra, Sadhana SargamWe have a list of Rajini hits rolling through this song. Plus, Daler brings his own brand of ‘josh’ to the piece. And the song ends in style with some ‘Jandai’ vadhyam merging along with the Punjabi beats! Quite pleasant.

Album: SarojaSong: Dosth...Music director: Yuvan Shankar RajaSinger(s): Haricharan, Naveen, Rahul NambiarA simple song that sings of affectionate friendship. Of course, Yuvan’s music for this movie has been eagerly looked forward to. No strident rhythms here and the song has a slight western touch. Could climb higher.

Album: Dhaam DhoomSong: Anbe en Anbe...Music director: Harris JayarajSinger(s): Harish RaghavendraRight from the opening bars, this song keeps you in its hold. Soft, yet nuanced articulation by Harish. Some nice humming and lovely use of stringed instruments enhance the melody. No wonder it has stayed on the charts.

Album: DasavatharamSong: Oh ho Sanam...Music director: Himesh ReshammiyaSinger(s): Kamal Hassan, Mahalakshmi IyerThis song has foot tapping rhythms and occurs almost towards the climax of the movie. Some good dancing by Kamal and Jayapradha adds to the overall impact of the song. Sung well, too.

Album: SubramaniapuramSong: Madura Kulunga...Music director: James VasanthanSinger(s): Velmurugan, Suchitra, Madurai Banumathi and groupA song with a true earthy flavour, so to speak. Racy ethnic rhythms, Naiyandi melam (no synthesizer here) some ‘Thappaatta’ mettu and full throated rendering enliven the song. We have a pleasant western interlude too.

Album: JayamkondaanSong: Adai Mazhai…Music director: VidyasagarSinger(s): KarthikSimple instrumental interludes combined with melodic singing by Karthik and of course the easy, flowing lyrics of Vaali make this song fall easy on the ears. Nice tinkling sounds that mirror the fall of raindrops as articulated in the song add to the charm.

Album: Yaaradi Nee MohiniSong: Engaeyo…Music director: Yuvan Shankar RajaSinger(s): Udit NarayanThe slow snaking rhythm of the song, the childlike articulation of Udit and the opening and closing bars which are quite pretty, have somewhat endeared this song to the listener. Though it slipped out of the list, it always manages to come back. Could stay on for some more time, too.

Album: KuruviSong: Mozhamozhannu…Music director: VidyasagarSinger(s): Anuradha Sriram, K.K.Well, Vijay’s songs somehow catch the fancy of the public even if they are a little short on melody sometimes. Maybe his dancing prowess plays a part. And there’s no discounting Anuradha’s infectious voice.

This fortnight’s top ten list features some old regulars but also some interesting new melodies. The punchy numbers still continue to make their presence felt. And the most predictable one on the list? Ha, ha, you know it as well as we do!! Let us have a look at what is on offer.Rankings based on : • Audio sales at music outlets in Chennai.• Radio and Television ratings.• Number of online Downloads.• Ring tones downloads• General Public reactions to the songs. Album: Kadhalil VizhundhenSong: Naaka Mukka...Music director: Vijay AntonySinger(s): Chinnaponnu, NakulThe Old Faithful is still around. Much to everyone’s amusement. The interesting way the song has been structured must have contributed to its roaring popularity. If only Vijay Antony had asked for a rupee every time this song was played, he’d be sitting on a pile now!
